Entry/Admission Requirements

Torrens University Australia provides a range of pathways to university study as part of its commitment to equity and a belief that everyone should have access to further education. To gain entry to an accredited course at Torrens University Australia, applicants must satisfy both general admissions criteria and meet any additional course requirements where specified.

General Admission Requirements

Applicants with higher education study

Applicants who have completed prior higher education study may be assessed and selected for admission if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

• A completed higher education qualification at AQF level 5 (diploma) or above, or equivalent, from an Australian University or another accredited higher education provider
• Successful completion of at least 1 EFTSL (equivalent full time student load, or one full year) of an AQF level 6 (Associate Degree) or above, or equivalent, from an Australian University or another accredited higher education provider

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

Applicants who have completed prior vocational education study may be assessed and selected for admission if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

• A completed vocational education qualification at AQF level 4 (Certificate IV) or above, or equivalent, from a registered training organisation (RTO)
• Successful completion of at least 1 EFTSL (equivalent full time student load, or one full year) of an AQF level 5 (Diploma) or above, or equivalent, at a registered training organisation (RTO)

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants who left secondary education more than two years ago (whether that be three years ago or thirty years or more) may be assessed and selected based on any combination of the below:

• Formal learning, including fully or partially completed qualifications, schooling or other structured courses of learning that lead to an officially accredited qualification
• Non-formal learning through structured courses that do not lead to an officially accredited qualification, such as work-based courses and non-accredited professional development
• Informal learning gained through relevant work or life experience, self-tuition and social, family, hobby or leisure activities and experiences. This might also include volunteering experience, community activities or industry experience.

Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years)

Overseas Year 12 Equivalent

Applicants who have completed a secondary school qualification from an overseas institution within the prior two-year period, will have their application assessed by the International Admissions team to determine equivalency with the Australia secondary school certificate, using NOOSR and/or NARIC guidelines.

Australian Year 12 (all states and territories)

Applicants who have completed an Australian secondary school certificate within the prior two-year period may be assessed and selected for admission if they meet the minimum threshold ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank). The following minimum threshold ATARs apply:

• For entry to AQF level 7 (Bachelor degrees), applicants must have a minimum ATAR of 60
• For entry to AQF level 6 (Associate degrees) or AQF level 5 (Diplomas), applicants must meet course-specific entry requirements.

Non-ATAR Admission

Recent school leavers whose schooling has been interrupted or whose performance has been impacted by disability, illness or family disruption will be given special consideration for admission even if they have not achieved a valid ATAR or if their ATAR is below the minimum threshold

Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) must have:

• Completed their IB Diploma, and
• Achieved a score of at least 24 points.

Special Entry

Applicants in any category whose study, work or life experiences have been impacted by disability, illness or family disruption will be given special consideration for admission by our Pro Vice-Chancellor. Each application will be considered on its merit, based on the evidence supplied by the applicant attesting to the circumstances of the applicant. Applicants for special entry may need to complete written or numerical tasks to assist with assessing eligibility for admission.

Course-specific quotas

Where a course has a set number of places available (a quota), applicants who meet the minimum entry threshold and any course-specific requirements will be admitted on a first-come first-serve basis.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants

Torrens University Australia encourages applications for admission from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, and is committed to increasing the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates.

Torrens has a dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Adviser to help students transition to the University and connect students with one-on-one support throughout their studies.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can apply to Torrens based on:

• completing high school in any state or territory, or equivalent, and meeting the minimum ATAR required for entry
• completing any certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma from a TAFE or RTO
• completing at least one year of higher education study from any registered University or other higher education provider
• sitting a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) from any of the tertiary admission centres
• completing any Aboriginal pathway or foundation program recognised as a basis of admission by another Australian University
• providing evidence of work and life experience, including involvement in community alongside other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

Australian citizens or permanent residents with overseas qualifications will have their qualifications assessed by the University’s International Admissions team, using NOOSR and/or NARIC guidelines.

English language proficiency

International applicants and domestic applicants who have not studied at the secondary level in English must also satisfy the University’s English Language Proficiency Requirements. To satisfy these requirements, applicants must provide evidence of one of the following three options:

• Assessable qualifications in English from specified countries, including:
  • successful completion of secondary education, or
  • minimum one-year full-time or part-time equivalent of tertiary education or
  • an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) award at Level 4 or above
• Achieving the minimum course requirements in an approved English language test within 24 months of the commencement of studies at Torrens University Australia.
  • Some courses may require a higher overall score and/or sub-score(s) for entry as specified in the course-specific requirements.
• Other evidence, including alternative English language tests and other evidence of English language proficiency, considered on a case-by-case basis by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic.

International applicants may also need to demonstrate compliance with relevant legislative requirements, for example, requirements for student visas.

You can apply any time throughout the year for the next trimester start date, or a future start date if you are planning ahead.

Course fees are dependent on the duration of the course, subjects chosen and whether you study full time or part time.
